In this project, Dr. Christopher Diller and I wanted to create a learning experience to serve as a prelude to his students’ study of Herman Melville’s novella Benito Cereño in ENG 200 Captivity Narratives. Our goal was to create a tool that provided students a glimpse into the journey that the characters in the novella would have experienced from point of enslavement to arrival at the Pacific Ocean. In this tool we wove period images, first-hand accounts, and videos into a multimedia learning module that we hope will provide empathy and insight into the enslaved Africans plight and prepare them to discuss the themes in Benito Cereño.
