The data manager accepts\u00a0numeric and non-numeric\u00a0data. Notice that the first cell is in blue &#8212; this is the active cell that is ready to accept data.<\/p>\n<p><b>Example<\/b>. Enter the numbers 1 to 10 in the first column of the data manager. \u00a0Next, click on the yellow column heading (currently &#8220;Var #1); this is how you change a variable name. You will be presented with this dialog:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.berry.edu\/vbissonnette\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2016\/06\/data2.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-664\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-664 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.berry.edu\/vbissonnette\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2016\/06\/data2.png\" alt=\"data2\" width=\"277\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.berry.edu\/vbissonnette\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2016\/06\/data2.png 277w, https:\/\/sites.berry.edu\/vbissonnette\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2016\/06\/data2-260x192.png 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 277px) 100vw, 277px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Enter a new variable name for your variable, and click &#8220;Update Variable.&#8221;\u00a0 You should always label your data &#8212; so let&#8217;s get you in that habit right away!<\/p>\n<p>Another thing that you should always do is to save your data. Pull down the <b>File<\/b> menu and choose <b>Save Data As<\/b>. Choose a file location and a file name. The mean for these data is 5.50. So, each score in the second column is equal to the score in the first column minus 5.50. Notice how the second column is automatically given a label. Just for practice, use the Rescale Data dialog to compute the square of each of these deviation scores.<\/p>\n<p>Re-save your data and spend some time exploring the features of the data manager. You will find that it is very easy for you to use and that it has a variety of helpful functions built into it.<\/p>\n<h3>Pasting Data From Other Programs<\/h3>\n<p>If your data happen to already be entered into a spreadsheet such as Microsoft Excel, or Open Office, you can easily transfer the data from that program to <i>Stats Homework<\/i>. Simply highlight the data in your spread sheet and copy these data to the clipboard by pressing Ctrl-C. Then, pull down the Edit menu in\u00a0<i>Stats Homework,<\/i> and select &#8220;Paste Data from Clipboard.&#8221; \u00a0If this approach does not work well for you, use the file transfer procedure described next.<\/p>\n<h3>Importing Data Files from Other Programs<\/h3>\n<p><i>Stats Homework<\/i> reads and writes\u00a0CSV and tab-delimited files &#8212; the default format is CSV. A delimiter is a specific character that you use to separate data in your data file. In a\u00a0CSV file there is a\u00a0comma between each score\u00a0within an observation (line), and then there is a carriage return (i.e. the enter key) at the end of each line.<\/p>\n<p>The first line in the file should\u00a0include the name(s) of the variable(s). Each line below the first contain the data. So a CSV data file will look something like this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Variable_Name_#1,Variable_Name#2,Variable_Name_#3<br \/>\nscore,score,score<br \/>\nscore,score,score<br \/>\nscore,score,score<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You can create\u00a0CSV and tab-delimited\u00a0files in a number of different programs. For example, spreadsheet programs like Microsoft Excel\u00ae are very powerful data managers. Let&#8217;s say that you have a data set in Excel that you would like to analyze with <i>Stats Homework<\/i>. Here are the data from the one-factor ANOVA problem:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.berry.edu\/vbissonnette\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2016\/06\/data7-1.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-681\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-681 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.berry.edu\/vbissonnette\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2016\/06\/data7-1.png\" alt=\"data7\" width=\"511\" height=\"395\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.berry.edu\/vbissonnette\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2016\/06\/data7-1.png 511w, https:\/\/sites.berry.edu\/vbissonnette\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2016\/06\/data7-1-300x232.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.berry.edu\/vbissonnette\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2016\/06\/data7-1-260x201.png 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 511px) 100vw, 511px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Note that the variable names are in the first row of data, and the data follow &#8212; one column for each variable, one row for each observation.<\/p>\n<p>To export the data, pull down the <b>File<\/b> menu, and choose <b>Save As<\/b>. You will be presented with a dialog window:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.berry.edu\/vbissonnette\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2016\/06\/data8.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-682\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-682\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.berry.edu\/vbissonnette\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2016\/06\/data8.png\" alt=\"data8\" width=\"669\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.berry.edu\/vbissonnette\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2016\/06\/data8.png 669w, https:\/\/sites.berry.edu\/vbissonnette\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2016\/06\/data8-300x212.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.berry.edu\/vbissonnette\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2016\/06\/data8-260x184.png 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 669px) 100vw, 669px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Change the file type to CSV or to Text(Tab Delimited), then give your file a new file name, and then click the Save button.\u00a0 When saving CSV files, make sure to add &#8216;.csv&#8217; to the end of your filename.<\/p>\n<h3>Generating Random\/Simulated Data<\/h3>\n<p><i>Stats Homework<\/i> includes a number of routines that can be used to generate random simulated data sets that you might use for a statistical analysis. Let&#8217;s work with one example to illustrate the function of these procedures.<\/p>\n<p>Pull down the <b>Data<\/b> menu, click <b>Simulate Data<\/b>, and then click <b>Simulate Data for a Descriptive Study<\/b>. Specify that you would like to create one variable with 50 observations. Specify that you would like the mean to be 75 with a standard deviation of 10. Specify that you would like to round the scores. When your dialog window looks like the one above, press the <b>Begin<\/b> button.<\/p>\n<p>You will find that your data manager now has a new variable with 50 scores. Investigate these scores with the <a href=\"explore.html\">explore procedure<\/a>, and create a <a href=\"histogram.html\">histogram<\/a> of these data. You will find that your scores will not have a mean and standard deviation of exactly 75 and 10, respectively, but they will tend to be quite close to this.<\/p>\n<p>For practice, repeat this procedure and vary the sample size.
