HON 221 Foundations of Modern Biology 3-2-4
The foundations of modern biology, including Greek, Hebrew, and Christian views of nature, growth of evolutionary thought, classical genetics, development, and ecology. The laboratory recreates classical experiments in biology. Readings of classic works by Aristotle, Hippocrates, William Harvey, Robert Hooke, Leeuwenhoek, Charles Darwin, Eugene Odum, Robert McArthur, Gregor Mendel, and James Watson and Francis Crick.
Course Description
This is an introduction to the history and concepts of modern biology, including readings of classic works by Aristotle, Hippocrates, William Harvey, Robert Hooke, Leeuwenhoek, Charles Darwin, Eugene Odum, Robert McArthur, Gregor Mendel, and James Watson and Francis Crick. Topics include science and medicine of the ancient world, anatomy, microscopy, physiology, paleontology, evolution, ecology, genetics, and developmental biology.
